My name is Maya Brouwer.
I was born in 1945 in Medan on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, the eldest of four children.
I attended the Oranjeschool, HBS High School and some other schools.
Because of the changing political situation, Dutch-language schools were closed and working permits for Dutch citizens were declared null and void.
As my father was Dutch, we moved to the Netherlands in 1962.
In high school in Alkmaar I met my husband Theo. We married in 1971 and in 1980 emigrated to Canada.
Our children Sonja and John were born and raised in the South Okanagan.
Sonja is presently employed as a teacher in Williams Lake and John studies Electronic Engineering at Camosun College in Victoria.
Until 2003 we ran a Campground and a Retirement Park near Gallagher Lake in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia.
In that year we sold our business and moved to Brentwood Bay, close to Victoria on Vancouver Island.
We are now a 15 minute walk away from Butchart Gardens and a 25 minute drive from Sidney and Victoria.
My hobbies are gardening, reading, walking, quilting and playing the piano.
I used to do quite a bit of drawing and painting, but for the last 15 years I have been completely dedicated to quilting.
Almost every day I can be found in my studio above the garage working on new quilt designs.
I am a member of the Oliver Double O Quilt Guild. Over the years I have built up a nice quilt and art library.
One of my husband's hobbies is Genealogy. Therefore you will find a link to the pedigree (in Dutch) of my mom Sariah Velsink and her brother Dr. Adil Mansoer on this page as well.
